The Plaza Theatre

The home of the 2025 Buried Alive Film Festival is none other than The Historic Plaza Theatre, a cherished Atlanta landmark and the city’s oldest continuously operating movie theater. We chose the Plaza not only for its rich history and beautiful architecture but also because it embodies the spirit of Atlanta’s vibrant arts community. As we celebrate independent horror and genre filmmaking, we’re excited to give back by supporting this iconic venue, which has been a cultural hub since 1939. By hosting our festival here, we’re proud to contribute to preserving this important piece of Atlanta’s heritage for future generations.

Theater Screenings

This year, the Buried Alive Film Festival takes over all three theaters at The Plaza, the LeFont, which seats 350, and the Rej and the Mike, each offering a more intimate theater experience with seating for 43. With over 120 films and screenplays from around the world, audiences will be treated to a diverse mix of horror, dark fantasy, and twisted storytelling. Whether you’re joining the packed crowd in the LeFont or enjoying the close, eerie atmosphere of the Rej and the Mike, Buried Alive 2025 promises a spine-tingling celebration of the genre in every shadowed corner.

The History of The Plaza

The Historic Plaza Theatre, home of the 2025 Buried Alive Film Festival, holds more than just cinematic history, it’s also rumored to be haunted. Over the years, staff and visitors have reported strange occurrences, from unexplained cold drafts to flickering lights and even the occasional sound of footsteps echoing through empty hallways. One of the more famous stories involves a projectionist who worked at the Plaza in the 1940s. Legend has it that his spirit still lingers in the projection booth, where films have mysteriously started or stopped on their own. Some claim to have seen his shadowy figure watching over late-night screenings, adding a chilling layer to the theater’s already eerie charm. This spooky reputation makes the Plaza the perfect setting for our festival, where horror comes to life both on and off the screen.
